by Kal Gronvall Once again the insidious tentacles of racial prejudice created by Lorna Marquardt, the mayor of Shawano, snared and captured many more victims, this time at the Birch Hill Nursing Home.
One of the employees at The Spirit of the Northwoods downtown departmental store developed a special program for Valentine’s Day to remember especially Shawano area nursing homes, senior citizens, and veterans along with their families. This special program includes 10% off a Lunch or Dinner meal at the Best Western Restaurant on Wednesday, February 14, 2007, with free soda or coffee, a Valentine’s Day card with candy, and coupons for area businesses.
Birch Hill was one of the nursing homes on the list to which we extended this special offer for Valentine’s Day. On Friday afternoon, January 12, 2007, when the employee from The Northwoods called the Birch Hill Nursing Home to discuss the program, which will benefit their residents and their families, she asked if they would be interested in posting the notice at Birch Hill announcing the Valentine’s Day Lunch and Dinner Program. The receptionist who answered transferred the call to the Birch Hill employee responsible for special programs. When she answered, the employee did not give her name nor introduce herself. However, when she heard that the Valentine’s Day Special Event was going to be held at the Best Western Restaurant, she barked, “Who owns that business anyhow, Dr. Roy?” Taken aback by the abrupt retort, the Northwoods employee said, “No, Dr. Roy doesn’t own the Best Western, SIST does. Dr. Roy is the President of the school but he doesn’t own the motel.” The Birch Hill employee snapped back, “I’m not interested,” and slammed down the receiver.
It was obvious that Lorna’s racial prejudice toward Dr. Roy had spread itself everywhere, like octopus tentacles, capturing and violating its next victim and making the people to be so ignorant as to hurt their own, the residents of Shawano, and their economy. What a great thing Lorna has done, keeping these Shawano senior citizens and retirees, low income residents, from getting a discounted meal at the Best Western Restaurant, which as everyone knows has the city’s best food and is known for its beef and seafood and you name it—famous mashed potatoes, meatloaf, prime rib, New York strip, tenderloin, roast beef, hamburgers. Anything you can think about is the best there. People from all over come there to eat because of its quality of food.
What happened here is an example of Lorna, so taken up with her racial hatred and dislike of Dr. Roy and SIST, which has so blinded her that she cares less about her own citizens, who could benefit from this great program along with other businesses in the city. This is the result of 32 years of organized prejudice and discrimination by town, city, and county officials against Dr. Roy and SIST. Remember Lorna’s famous quote: “I’ll not buckle and am determined to hate this racial, subhuman being!”
Encouraging this blatant prejudice has been the Shawano Leader (nicknamed the “Evil Leader), the mouthpiece of these corrupt officials. Any time that someone, namely people in places of authority in Shawano, wants to slander Dr. Roy or SIST and fabricate stories about them, all they have to do is contact that tiny newspaper and tell them what to print. And they are happy to print it, even though it never bears even the slightest resemblance to the truth. And because of all the negative publicity from Lorna and her crew, that influence is devastating, and its tentacles have spread into many Shawano businesses. So, in reality, Lorna’s racial prejudice just oozed into the Birch Hill Nursing Home and robbed its clients—our veterans, senior citizens and their loved ones—of a special day. |
